Subsentio’s beginnings can be traced to the ratification of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (CALEA).  This landmark legislation was passed in part due to the efforts of a Federal Bureau of Investigations, Supervisory Special Agent (specializing in telecommunications intercepts) who had extensive knowledge of the challenges law enforcement was beginning to face when dealing with the new forms of communications that were being developed.  That person is now Chief Security Officer of Subsentio.

On September 11, 2001 an employee at SS8, a CALEA manufacturer, was profoundly impacted by the events of that day.  His desire to help law enforcement with electronic surveillance became a passion and in 2004 he formed Subsentio, a Latin word that means “to notice secretly.”

Within months of its incorporation, Subsentio was asked by the Department of Justice for assistance in providing cost estimates for a new petition to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to extend CALEA to broadband and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).  Those cost estimates were based on a Trusted Third Party model which lowers costs when shared across multiple platforms with multiple clients.  In 2005, the First Report and Order mandated CALEA for all broadband and VoIP telecommunication providers by May 14, 2007.  Several FCC commissioners referred to Subsentio’s cost analysis in their comments for voting in favor of its passage.

Since then Subsentio has never wavered in its support of law enforcement and has become the standard for Trusted Third Parties, performing lawful intercepts across a myriad of telecommunication platforms for Federal, State and Local law enforcement agencies.
