Subsentio Statement on FBI Director James Comey’s “Going Dark” Comments at the Brookings Institution
October 16, 2014Washington, DC, Thursday, Oct 16, 2014 — The following is attributable to Joel M. Margolis, Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Subsentio:
“Director Comey strongly hinted that he plans to ask Congress to update the CALEA statute. It raises a host of questions about what service providers will be covered and how the statute could be written to meet the needs of law enforcement without undue infringements on privacy or excessive burdens on industry.”

Subsentio’s Steve Bock to Talk CALEA at ITEXPO
Not so long ago, word emerged about how law enforcement was having a particularly difficult time adjusting to the modern communications environment. With new technology for communications arriving regularly, and the laws better suited to the older technology, conflicts can arise. But one law designed to help on this front is the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), and this law will get a special look thanks to Subsentio’s president, Steve Bock, at the upcoming ITEXPO event.
ITEXPO HIGHLIGHT: SUBSENTIO PRESIDENT STEVE BOCK TO DEMO “WIRETAPPING UP CLOSE & PERSONAL – WHY CALEA COMPLIANCE IS A MUST”
August 5, 2014Real-Life Wiretapping Scenario Plus Interactive CALEA Risk Assessment
@ ITEXPO –The Rio-Las Vegas – Palmer Ballroom A-D, August 12, 3:15-4pm MTN
LAS VEGAS, AUGUST 5, 2014 – We see sensational news about the government’s threat to privacy day-in, day-out – thus far without evidence of a victim. The story never told: the flip side – use of court-ordered lawful intercept to catch murderers, drug lords, kidnappers, child pornographers, and to save lives, prevent injury to citizens, and even halt crimes in progress.
Those interested in how actual crimes are solved via advanced lawful intercept technologies – with the support of communications service providers as mandated by Act of Congress – can see and hear it firsthand one week from today at ITEXPO in Las Vegas.
On Tuesday August 12 beginning at 3:15pm in Palmer Ballroom A-D at The Rio – Las Vegas, Subsentio President Steve Bock will present “Wiretapping Up Close & Personal,” a real surveillance scenario where a communications service provider provided essential support in tracking and stopping a gangland execution.
That service provider was, as required by law, compliant with the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). Far too many of its peers, possibly including unified communications and cloud service providers attending IT EXPO, either flout or don’t know the requirement – or have technology solutions in place that don’t meet the standards of the law. All risk severe legal penalties.
For their benefit, Steve Bock will also host an interactive “Risk Assessment” with audience members to grade their CALEA status, with an action plan on how to avoid their own day in court and fines of up to $10,000 per day for non-compliance.
SUBSENTIO PRESIDENT STEVE BOCK PRESENTS “CITIZENS APPRECIATE STATE TROOPERS” AWARDS TO COLORADO STATE PATROL TECHNICIAN GARTH CROWTHER AND TROOPER BRENT GILLELAND
August 4, 2014DENVER, AUGUST 4, 2014 – In a tribute to Colorado lawmen who go beyond the call of duty, Subsentio President Steve Bock presented the “Citizens Appreciate State Troopers” (C.A.S.T.) Award to Technician Garth Crowther and State Trooper Brent Gilleland in a ceremony held August 1 at the Governor’s Residence.
“It is a privilege to honor two individuals whose heroism speaks to a quality shared by all men and women of the Colorado State Patrol – the willingness to save a life even when it means putting their own lives in harm’s way,” said Bock. “In this instance, the threat was the most deadly of all – a force of nature.”
On February 9, 2013, off-duty State Trooper Gilleland and his family were returning from a trip to New Mexico when they hit a classic Colorado blizzard: waist-deep snow and 18 degree temperatures, with winds gusting to 30 mph. At the Cumbres/La Manga Pass they were hailed by Jeff Mondragon of the Colorado Department of Transportation. Mondragon pointed to a vehicle that had crashed through a barrier and plunged 150 feet down a steep embankment.
Patrolling nearby, Colorado State Patrol Technician Crowther was quickly dispatched to the scene. Together, Crowther, Gilleland and Mondragon moved down the slope to find the injured driver in critical condition and suffering hypothermia. Making numerous trips up the cliff to gather blankets from other motorists, and managing to start the crashed vehicle and its heater, the men kept the victim alive in the hour it took for Emergency Services to arrive.
The Colorado State Patrol subsequently honored Crowther and Gilleland with the State Patrol Lifesaving Award. Mondragon received the Certificate of Honor, which is bestowed on a private citizen for a conspicuous act of heroism that involves a risk of life and knowledge of that risk.
SUBSENTIO CHALLENGES COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY: PUT YOUR CALEA COMPLIANCE TO THE TEST
July 16, 2014SUBSENTIO CHALLENGES COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY: PUT YOUR CALEA COMPLIANCE TO THE TEST
Pass or Fail? 1-Minute Online CALEA Risk Assessment Test Helps Communications Companies Check Vulnerability to Non-Compliance Penalties
DENVER, JULY 16, 2014 – Subsentio is offering a free Risk Assessment Test that lets any communications service provider quickly determine whether it meets the compliance requirements of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA).
The test is available on Subsentio’s home page: www.subsentio.com
The Subsentio CALEA Compliance Risk Assessment Test coincides with the 20th anniversary of CALEA. Twenty years after the fact, many communications service providers still fail to observe the law. The penalties for non-compliance with CALEA can be harsh, including mandatory court appearance by the company’s chief executive officer, court fines and possible jail time.
“On numerous occasions we have encountered established as well as next generation service providers who are at risk,” said Martin McDermott, Executive Vice President – Marketing for Subsentio. “Some have solutions that are technically out of date, others have failed to file mandatory plans with the Federal Communications Commission, and a few have no CALEA program in place at all, and are completely exposed.”
McDermott added: “When lives are at stake in a criminal investigation and law enforcement is authorized to proceed with the surveillance of dangerous elements, they must work at speed – and thus have little patience with any organization whose negligence menaces public safety. Our test helps companies take immediate action to comply with the law and protect themselves against legal sanctions that can be swift and severe.”
Subsentio’s CALEA Compliance Risk Assessment Test asks simple but probing questions on a participant’s current capabilities – technically and legally – to execute lawful intercept on receipt of a court order. Fact-based and vendor neutral, the test can be completed in a minute or less.
